Ramon “Montet" А с o y m о graduated from LSGH grade school in 1971 and high School in 1975. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of the Philippines (UP) where he graduated cum laude. He then took his Bachelor of Music, Voice, also from UP College of Music and became the first Filipino to graduate magna cum laude. He also studied at the University of Wyoming for his Masters degree in Music in Vocal Performance. He acquired his Ph.D., Education History and Philosophy also from UP. In 1995, Montet was the first Filipino classical singer in 14 year to have given a solo recital at the Alice Tully Hall at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, USA. He is a firstprize winner of the US National Association of Singing Teachers Competition and is also the first Filipino classical singer to sing a recital format at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Main Theater in 2003. Montet also won the UP Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Solo Music Performance. Montet has been described by the press on three continents as “mesmerizing” in New York, “successful" in Rottenburg and “remarkable” in Manila. His Lincoln Center recital debut was hailed a “triumph” by Headline Philippines, New York; and no less than the New York Times accorded him good notices for his theater debut as the lead in Flower Drum Song. Among his opera portrayals have been “Canio” in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, “Tamino" and “Monostatos" in Mozart's Die Zauberflote and the title roles in Blake's The Bear with the Hongkong Chamber Orchestra Society, “Oedipus" in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and “Pagong" in Philippine National Artist Lucrecia Kasilag's Ang Pagong at ang Matsing, a role which he created. Montet is currently the Dean of the UP College of Music, a consultant of the DLSU-CSB Music Production, Chair of the Technical Panel for Music of the Commission on Higher Education and the Secretary-General of the National Music Competition for Young Artists, a resident company of the CCP. He recently returned from performances at the I-lan Folklore and Folk Music Festival in Taiwan and the Kwangju International Arts and Music Festival in South Korea, as well as, as a featured concertartist at the National School Arts Festival in Baguio City. Montet's most recent opera lead (title) role was “Aeneas" in Purcell's “Dido and Aeneas” at the CCP’s Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, a production which he also directed. Montet released three CDs in the United States, where he also performed in opera, musical theater, concert and oratorio formats, notably Weill Hall at Carneige Hall, Merkin Concert Hall and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Montet has either taught Voice, Music Appreciation and History and given lecture recitals or performed in these capacities at the Universities of Cincinnati, Mississippi, Colorado and Wyoming. He was the ALIW awardee for Best Male Classical Singer from 2006 to 2008 and has been elevated to the ALIW Hall of Fame in 2009.
