Attorney Conrado Ayuyao, in his days as a law student at the University of the Philippines, was notorious for drag racing down the main strip of the university campus. His penchant for cars and casual automobile racing led to his friendship with known sportsman Dodjie Laurel. In the 50s, Ayuyao, Laurel, and the likes of Paquito Ventura, Ruben Saulog, Jun Campillo, Joe Cacho, Sergio Osmena III, Eugene and Sammy Sycip, and Bob Smith met regularly at what was once Nielson Towers along Makati Avenue, for drag races. Their casual get-togethers led to the formation of the first official motoring club in the country called the Cam Wreckers Association. Members of the group were active participants in several motorsports events in the country, and around Asia. Several of the races Ayuyao competed in earned him podium victories, including first place at the first Philippine Grand Prix in 1969. While the Cam Wreckers are significantly responsible for promoting racing as a sport in the country—dabbling in rallies, go-kart, drag racing—Ayuyao and the group paid great importance to socio civic work as well. During the Holy Week, the Cam Wreckers would station themselves throughout Kennon road, offering free assistance to cars that would overheat, or would have trouble climbing up the mountain. Ayuyao then became Chairman of the Motorsports committee of the Philippine Motor Association (now called Automobile Association of the Philippines), the national sporting authority for motorsports recognized by Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Not long after, Ayuyao then became PMA’s president, where he introduced emergency roadside assistance, and medical road services similar to the U.S.’s 911. Under his 14-year run as PMA president, Ayuyao managed to acquire state-of-the-art ambulances, and send personnel to the United States to train as paramedics. Ayuyao served as president of the Philippine Motors Association for 14 years.
