RAFAEL YGOA (HS '34, BSC '37) has always been identified with the Philippine Airlines because he work-ed with that firm for some three decades as a top official in San Fran-sisco, California. Rafael was born in Iloilo City on June 9, 1915, and spent 14 years of his student life at La Salle on Taft, where he starred as the goalie of the school's soc-cer football team. His first job was as chief accountant of C. Mies & Co. in Manila. He then joined the National City Bank of New York as assistant manager of the inward bills department. During the war years, he practiced privately as a public ac-countant for various firms, and as an instructor in ac-counting and banking. He left the Philippines in 1945 to work as chief accoun-tant of Taca Airways in New York. He joined PAL as com-ptroller in 1948, when Col. Andres Soriano was still managing it. Ygoa was even-tually promoted to executive vice-president. Three years later he joined Ayala As-sociates in San Francisco as an investment counsellor. In 1961 he returned to PAL and was elected president in 1963. He rejoined Ayala the following year, and went back to PAL in 1969 as executive vice-president. He stayed with PAL until his retirement early in 1984. Rafael Ygoa spent 14 years of his life in La Salle in Taft where he starred as the goalie of the school’s soccer football team.
