Br. John was one of the nine Christian Brothers who first came to Manila. For a total of 24 years, he was to teach the Filipino students in various roles, but was best known for his abiding interest in sports. He started the first basketball team in La Salle. In 1925, he organized the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) composed of La Salle, Ateneo de Manila, the University of the Philippines and the University of Sto. Tomas. Br. John then organized the Philippine Amateur Athletic Association. He was inducted into the DLSAA Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. In his honor, the Gawad Br. John Lynam FSC is given to outstanding student leaders in individual and team sports who stood out among all players in any sport and who has shown what true sportsmanship and leadership are all about.
